William R. Frederick, 88, of Elmore, Ohio, died Wednesday, May 11, 2011 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Perrysburg, Ohio. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on November 10, 1922, the son of Gustav A. & Mildred C. (Billmaier) Frederick. Bill was a graduate of the former Salem-Oak Harbor High School. A U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Bill played baseball for the U.S. Navy travelling team. An excellent player, he was recruited by several major league teams after the war. On November 9, 1951, Bill married the former Jeannine L. Barnes. He was an active member of St. Paul-Trinity United Methodist Church, Elmore, where he was a member of the dartball team. Bill also was a member of Elks Lodge #1718 and Moose Lodge #1610, both in Port Clinton. He and his father operated a bowling alley in downtown Oak Harbor for several years, and Bill later owned and operated Elmore Recreation, the Portage Inn, and the Town Hill Dairy Bar, all in Elmore. An ardent supporter of his community, he was generous in his help for the Boy Scouts, the Girl Scouts, and many other groups in Elmore. Bill loved to fish and operated a commercial fishing business for many years. After his retirement, he was a drawbridge operator at the Portage River drawbridge in Port Clinton. Bill was an avid fan of The Ohio State University Buckeyes and the Cleveland Indians. Bill and Jeannine greatly enjoyed harness racing and travelled to many different tracks. Bill is survived by his wife of nearly 60 years, Jeannine, and their children, Greg (Trish) Frederick, Coopersburg, PA, David R. (Kimberly) Frederick, Bowling Green, Ohio, and Amy (Mark) Snyder, Waterville, Ohio; grandchildren, Gus, Erin, Brady, Ryan, and Andrew Frederick, and Ashley, Matthew, and Alex Snyder. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Luanne Marie Frederick, and sisters, Lois Nye and Phyllis Lieske. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Friday at Crosser Funeral Home, Elmore-Genoa Chapel. Private graveside services will be held on Saturday at Elliston Cemetery, Elliston, Ohio. Bill's family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the Elmore American Legion Hall, 345 Sherman St., Elmore, at noon on Saturday.
