William H. Hirt

William H. Hirt, 90, of Danbury Township, died Tuesday March 14, 2017 at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky. He was born August 23, 1926 in Vickery, OH the third son of Harold "Sprocky" Hirt and Dorothy (Last) Hirt. He married Marian J. Bergman on October 18, 1947 and she preceded him in death on Dec 10, 2016. Bill was raised in Vickery and went to school in Townsend High School where he graduated as the valedictorian of his class in 1944. He was a veteran of the United States Army, having duty in the Philippines and with a military police unit in Tokyo serving as a prison guard for "Tokyo Rose", Tojo, and other high ranking Japanese officials. In 2010 he had the opportunity to enjoy an Honor Flight to Washington D. C. with several other veterans from northwest Ohio. He was also a rural letter carrier with the post office retiring after 30 years of service, and was elected to two terms as president of the Ohio Rural Letter Carriers Association serving from 1985 -1989. As for his dedication to his community, he was a Boy Scout Master for the Peninsula Scouts, served five terms as a Danbury Township Trustee and was a past president of St Paul Lutheran Church where he was a remarkable tenor in the church choir. Surviving are his sons: David (Jan) Hirt of Marblehead, William (Terrie) Hirt, II of Bay View, Robert Hirt of Sandusky; daughter: Marla Hirt of Marblehead; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife: Marian; brothers: Rollin, Warren and Luther Hirt. Following cremation funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday, March 22, 2017 at St. Paul Lutheran Church 541 Church Rd. Lakeside-Marblehead, OH where visitation will be held Tuesday from 4:00 7:00 and Wednesday from 9:00 until the time of the service at 11:00 am. Interment will be in St. Paul Lutheran Church Cemetery, Danbury. Reverend Chris Young will be officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be given to St. Paul Lutheran Church 541 Church R. Lakeside-Marblehead, OH 43440.
