William E. “Bill” Market, 77, of Put-in-Bay, passed away November 3, 2006 at Stein Hospice, Sandusky, OH. He was born July 27, 1929 at Put-in-Bay, OH, the son of the late William C. and Lena (Keimer) Market. Bill married Mary Ann DeVore on May 8, 1954 and she survives. Bill was the owner of the family business, Miller Boat Line, Put-in-Bay, Ohio which he and his wife purchased in 1978. Among his many professional accomplishments, he helped design and construct four ferries to service the islands of South Bass and Middle Bass. His namesake vessel the “William Market” was built in 1993 and remains in service today. In Bill’s later years, he could often be seen greeting passengers and friends on the Lime Kiln Dock at Put-in-Bay. In 2005, Bill and his wife, Mary Ann were honored as “Islanders of the Year” by the Put-in-Bay Property Owners Association. Bill was a member of the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, Put-in-Bay Yacht Club, Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Steamship Society of America, Great Lakes Historical Society, Great Lakes Passenger Vessel Association, Perry Group, Detroit Maritime Museum, and the Sandusky Maritime Museum. He served several years on the Put-in-Bay Town Council and was a past Chief of the Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department. Surviving are his loving wife of 52 years, Mary Ann; sons: Scott E. (Susan) Market, William C. “Billy” Market both of Put-in-Bay; daughter: Julene M. Market of Catawba Island; grandchildren: Jacob, Jordan, Caitlin, Leah, and Gwena Market. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:30 A.M. Monday, November 6, 2006 at Mother of Sorrows Church, Put-in-Bay, with Father Nick Cunningham officiating. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 1-5 P.M. at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton. Additional visitation will be held at the church from 9:30 A.M. until the time of the Mass. Interment will be in Mapleleaf Cemetery, Put-in-Bay.
