Walter F. "Fritz" Holz, 72, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, died Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Riverview Health Care Campus, Oak Harbor. He was born in the house in which he still lived on June 29, 1941, the son of Walter O. & Herta (Schiefer) Holz. Fritz was a 1959 graduate of Oak Harbor High School where he played sousaphone in the marching band and string bass in the school jazz band. He was a U. S. Army veteran serving from 1959 to 1962 in Korea. Following his army service, he was a member of the Army Reserves. Fritz was a tool & die maker/machinist for many years, retiring in 2010. He also was a Boy Scout leader for many years with Oak Harbor's Troop 316. He was also a little league coach for several years. An avid railroader, Fritz was a member of the Northwest Live Steamers of Ohio, the Mad River Nickel Plate Railroad Society, and the Early Engine Club at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. He also built his own live steam engine. On August 6, 1966, he married the former Gale C. Tobin, and she survives. Also surviving are his children, Lori (Charlie) Doyle, Norwalk, OH Jon (Tami) Holz, Peru, IN and Rod Holz, Oak Harbor; sisters, Dorothy Holz, Fayetteville, PA, Carol Baldwin, Glen Burnie, MD Audrey (Ken) Naese, Carmel, ME, Edith (Jim) Gregg, Mineral Wells, TX, and Janet Holz, Las Vegas, NV; grandchildren, Jon Holz, Jr, Gavin Holz, Evelyn Holz, Kate Doyle, and Chas Doyle; his exchange student granddaughter, Joselyn; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. Friends may call from 11:30-1:30 PM Sunday, June 22, 2014 at Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Oak Harbor, where memorial services will be held at 1:30 P.M. Following the service, a luncheon will be held at St. Paul United Church of Christ, 165 Toussaint St., Oak Harbor, Ohio. Memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice, the Live Steam Club, the Humane Society of Ottawa County, or St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.
