Captain Wally Suchy Dear husband to Erika Suchy (Solowiow), father to Ron (Helen) and Randy (Libby), grandfather to Annabeth, Joey, Radek and Jacek; loyal friend to many, business owner and operator, dedicated mariner and avid sportsman earned his rest on June 14, 2018. Our Dad was born Waldemar Suchy on November 7, 1940. He arrived as the fifth and youngest child of Czech settlers Jozef and Maria (Smutny) in Romaniv, Zhytomyr Oblast, Ukraine. After the family was forced to abandon Romaniv during World War II, the family fled west where Dad eventually enjoyed a rough and tumble childhood as a Displaced Person living in the pine forested hills of Strasburg and Bobingen just outside of Augsburg, Bavaria, Germany. It was there that he developed a passion for nature and the outdoors that lasted a lifetime. In 1955, Dad and his parents reunited with many other family members in the United States, settling in Cleveland, Ohio. Four short years later, Dad returned to Germany as a proud member of the U.S. 3rd Army and used each of his five mastered languages as an interpreter in service of the Headquarters & Headquarters Company along the Iron Curtain border during the height of the Cold War. Following his honorable discharge at the rank of Private First Class in 1962, Dad returned to the United States and proudly earned his U.S. Citizenship in 1964. He topped that a year later when on August 14th. 1965 he married our Mom, Erika, and was blessed to spend the next 52 years by her side. Over the next several years, as we boys each came along; Dad owned and operated several successful businesses in and around Cleveland. In 1978, Wally decided to leave Greater Cleveland for a new challenge on the Marblehead Peninsula; he and his wife purchased Mar-Lu Motel and Marina, and Dad subsequently earned his USCG Charter Captains License. For the last 40 years, Dad has overseen operations of our marina and resort, growing its success through hard work and sheer determination; all the while earning a reputation as a tough and trusted man who never refused those in need and who never failed in fairness and honesty. Our beloved patriarch is now reunited once more with many family members and friends. For this we are grateful. Those of us that love him now find solace in the fact that our Dad, Captain Wally Suchy, lives on in the fond memories of his friends and a family who will always love him, and, who are thankful for the life that he lived. The Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Peninsula Chapel, Lakeside-Marblehead, assisted the family during their time of need, and online condolences may be shared with them at www.neideckerleveckcrosser.com
