Vernon M. Fillmore

September 6, 1930 — September 17, 2011

Vernon Milton Fillmore completed his 81 year life journey on Saturday September 17th, 2011 at Stein Hospice in Sandusky, OH and now rests in the perpetual light of God. Vernon was born September 6, 1930 in Vickery, OH to Reuben & Wilma Apling Fillmore. They later moved to Port Clinton where Vernon attended the Port Clinton Schools. As a youth he worked at Williamson's Market and Blue Spruce Dairy. He served his country during the Korean War in the United States Air Force in communications being stationed in Japan. Vernon had many jobs as a younger man but retired from Ford Motor in Sandusky in 1992 after having worked there almost 25 years. He married LaVonne Fastzkie on April 13, 1988 and she survives. Vernon enjoyed boating & fishing, and traveling with LaVonne having visited many areas of our country including Hawaii and Alaska. They also cruised the Caribbean & visited Mexico. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the VFW. Vernon also enjoyed his family. Also surviving are his sons Steven Fillmore (Teresa) and family Mark, Matthew, & Andrew of Port Clinton. Ross Fillmore (Phil Hidy) of Columbus, OH; Brian Fillmore (Heidi) and family Maddison (Stephen) Behan, Abbey, & Blake Fillmore of Knoxville, TN; Darrell Fastzie (Kathy) and Elizabeth of Ofallen MO; daughters Melissa Brown (Tyler) and family Nicholas & Wesley of Urbana, OH; Rhonda VanNess of Sandusky and her family Jeremy (Mindy) Price of Fremont, OH, and Tamara (Richard) Meeks of Huntertown, IN; and great-grandchildren Mark, Ivy, & Amber Price, and Chloe & Lydia Meeks; and sister Jeanne Huskey of Port Clinton, OH, and many nieces & nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, son Michael, sisters Vera Gulau, Janice Schwartz, infant sister Roberta and gre-granddaughter: Taylor Meeks. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Wednesday, September 21, 2011 at Resurrection Lutheran Church, Catawba Island with Rev. Kurt Borows officiating. Burial will be in Catawba Island Cemetery. Memorials can be made to Stein Hospice of Sandusky, OH or Resurrection Lutheran Church of Port Clinton, OH. The family expresses their gratefulness to the staff & volunteers at Stein for their genuine care and concern for Vernon these past four weeks. Thank you.
