Steve Z. Urge, 80, of Put-in-Bay, died Friday evening on the island. He was born January 3, 1928 in Cleveland, the son of Steve and Helen (Kovach) Urge. Steve owned Standard Heating and Plumbing in Cleveland and was a Master Plumber for the City of Cleveland. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Coast Guard, was a mason and member of the Al Koran Shrine and the Concordia Lodge. On the island, he and Joy owned the Cellar Cache and he was an agent for Bolte Real Estate. Steve was a member of the Republican Central Committee, a former councilman on Put-in-Bay and Mayor from 1984-1995. A proficient motorcycle rider, Steve always had a Harley in the garage. Surviving are his wife Joy (Romig) whom he married on September 3, 1955; son Dane; daughters Teri (Burns) Pierce and Randi (Jack) Wertenbach all of Put-in-Bay; grandchildren Lindsay Pierce, Kyle, Michala, Erika and Victoria Wertenbach, Ally, Zoly and Erin Urge and a sister Elsie (Frank) Ruggiero of Millbrae, CA. His parents preceded him in death. Friends may call from 1:30 pm Friday until the time of services at 2:30 Friday at the Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church, Put-in-Bay. The Rev. Daniel Keck of St. Johns at the Bay Lutheran Mission, will officiate. Memorial Contributions may be made to the Put-in-Bay EMS or for a scholarship at Put-in-Bay Local Schools.
