Ruth M. Meier, 95, of Catawba Island, died Sunday, October 16, 2011 in the company of her children, at her residence. She was born on January 11, 1916 in Orrville, Ohio, the daughter of the late Norman and Estella (Null) Wirth. On December 29, 1940 she married Walter L. Meier, and he preceded her in death on April 28, 1973. Ruth had operated school cafeterias in Smithville and Port Clinton, Ohio, and also cooked for Phil's Inn, in Port Clinton. She did alterations at the former Appels store in Port Clinton. She was a past member of St. John Lutheran Church, Port Clinton; past president and officer of the Commodore Perry Patron League; past matron of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 267, including Ladies Oriental Shrine; Dendarah Court #10, Toledo, Ohio; and Tri City Ladies Shrine Club; past member of the Erie Army Depot Officers Club and NARFE; and past member of the Lakeside Federation of Women. Her hobbies include: cooking, playing pinocle, feeding her birds and squirrels daily, traveling to many states- most notably Hawaii, and watching Joel Olsteen's "Focus of Life" on TV. She enjoyed life, but more importantly, she loved her family, especially caring for her grandchildren. Survivors include her daughter: Janis (Jack) Nitz, and son: Walter "Wally" (Alice) Meier, both of Port Clinton; grandchildren: Michael (Carolyn) Nitz; Jenifer (Paul) Dackermann; Aimee (Ron) DeLuca; great grandchildren: Kayley Nitz, Avery, Alaina, and Arleigh Dackermann. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, sisters: Helen Boyer and Eva Eshelman; and brother: Vernon Wirth. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton from 5:30pm until services conducted by members of the Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 267 at 7pm. Graveside services will be held on Thursday, October 20, 2011, at 11am at Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton, with Pastor Bruce Rodgers, chaplain of Senior Independence Hospice, officiating.
