Robert M. Burket

Robert M. Burket, 93, of Port Clinton and formerly Middle Bass Island

passed away on Saturday, January 27,2024 at Admiral’s Pointe Nursing

and Rehabilitation Center, Huron, Ohio. He was born December 1,1930 in

Everett, Pennsylvania; a son of the late Elmer W. Burket and Marie

(Karns) Burket. On August 19, 1952, in Cumberland, Maryland, he

married Dorothy Twigg. She preceded him in death on June 14, 2010.

He is survived by a daughter Deborah Navin married to Philip,

Woodland, Washington; grandson LTC Sean Navin married to Laura

Donahue, Ft. Leavenworth, Kansas; sibling Ann Mayer, Highland Beach,

Florida and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a son: Robert Burket, Jr. in August 1987,

and his sister Mary Lou Porcelli.

Mr. Burket was a graduate of Everett Area High School, Class of 1949,

where he played varsity football for three years. He served in the

United States Marine Corps from 1950-1952. While fighting in the

mountains of North Korea during the Korean war with Easy Company, 2nd

Battalion, Fifth Regiment, he served as a sniper and was a recipient

of the Purple Heart. After his discharge from the Marine Corps, he

attended Stevens Trade School (now known as Thaddeus Stevens College

of Technology) in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. After completing his

education as an electrician, he moved to the Cleveland, Ohio area to

work at Republic Steel Corporation. He later became a civil service

employee for the Nike Missile Defense System in the Lake Erie area,

eventually retiring from civil service at Ireland Army hospital, Ft.

Knox, Kentucky.

He was an active member of American Legion Post 542 and the VFW while

he lived in Put-in-Bay and Middle Bass Island, as well as a

participant in the reunion group of his fellow Marine Corps E-2-5

Korean War veterans. He lived on Middle Bass Island full-time for many

years and helped form the Middle Bass Island Yacht Club. He

volunteered at the Middle Bass Island State Park marina when it first

opened and enjoyed meeting fellow boaters from all over the country.

An avid fisherman, Mr. Burket liked to say he was able to fish full

time for longer than he had worked, catching more than his share of

perch, bass, and walleye.

Mr. Burket’s family expresses heartfelt gratitude to his team at the

Sandusky VA Clinic for years of exceptional medical care. The family

also thanks the home health care provided by the staff at Guiding

Hands Home Health Services, and more recently, the physician and

nursing staff of Admiral’s Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation center.
