Master Sergeant Robert Lee Hermes, USAF Robert Lee Hermes, 69, died Friday, May 25, 2012 at Mercy San Juan Medical Center, Carmichael, California, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born in Oak Harbor, Ohio on March 16, 1943, to William & Florence (Lochotzki) Hermes. Robert retired as a Master Sergeant from the United States Air Force in 1985, serving in Vietnam for 15 months. He also did tours of duty in the Philippines, Japan, Australia, Germany, and several U.S. cities. After retirement, he worked for Rio Linda Union School District in California. Robert enjoyed working in his garden, cooking, baking for his family, friends, and neighbors, helping widows in his neighborhood, bicycling, walking, and most of all, being with his family and grandchildren. Robert is survived by his wife, Diane Bortel, who he married on December 10, 1969; sons, Drew and David; daughter, Rena, grandchildren, Kimberly, Kayla, Kristopher, Amber, Ashley, and Meaghan Rogers; great grandson, Giovanni; brothers, Joseph, Paul, James (Jennie), John (Sharon), Richard (Paula), Larry (Elaine), and sisters, Agnes Schiller, Dorothy (George) Bernard, Ceil (Andy) Frisari, Marie (Steve) Knight, and Rosie Hermes. He was preceded in death by his parents, his twin sister, Roberta, and sister, Annie; his mother-in-law, Ellen Mae (Granny Baby) Bortel, George Washington Bortel, Jr,; in-laws, Loren Schiller, Dianne Hermes, Robert Bernard, and David Raymond Bortel. The family will receive friends from 2-8 P.M. Tuesday at the Crosser Funeral Home, Oak Harbor, where a parish wake service will be held at 7:30 P.M. Tuesday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Wednesday at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, with the Rev. James E. Peiffer officiating. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery, Fremont, Ohio. The cremains of his mother-in-law, Ellen Mae Bortel, will also be interred at this time.
