Robert J. "Socko" Szakovits

Robert J. "Socko" Szakovits, 78, of Oak Harbor, OH passed away on August 27, 2017 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio. He was born July 26, 1939, the son of the late Joseph and Mary (Srodek) Szakovits. Bob was a 1957 Oak Harbor High School graduate where he lettered in football, basketball and track. He attended Indiana University and Bowling Green State University receiving his Bachelor of Science in Education in 1961. Later, he received his Master's in Education and Educational Specialist degree from Bowling Green State University. Bob worked in the field of education for 42 years as a teacher, principal and superintendent, until his retirement in 2005. He was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, Port Clinton Elks Lodge #1718, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge #1610, Port Clinton and Port Clinton Yacht Club. Bob was a faithful "Toussainger" spending a lot of his life along the shores of Lake Erie. Upon his retirement he moved back to Ottawa County, building his home along the waterfront to be closer to the family he so loved. After his retirement he became an avid golfer. He did not consider himself a very good golfer, but he did really enjoy the competition and comradery he had with his friends on the golf course. But, even more than that, he most enjoyed the 19th hole after a golf game with his friends. Survivors include his daughter: Mary Ann (Kevin) Mackey of Woodville, OH; son: Michael (Marcia) Zak of Waterville, OH; grandchildren: Sean Mullin and Shannon Mullin of Woodville, OH; sister: Susan (Robert) Browder of Oak Harbor; nieces: Kimberly Woggon of Sylvania, OH, Michelle (Kevin) Fisher of Perrysburg, OH, Lynette (Steve) Hablitzel of Woodville, OH and longtime special friend Judy Franck of Oak Harbor, OH. The family will receive friends at Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 301 N. Locust St. Oak Harbor, OH on Friday, September 1, 2017 from 2:00 8:00 pm with a Parish Wake Service at 7:30pm in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father Tim Ferris at 10:30 am Saturday, September 2, 2017 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, 215 N. Church St. Oak Harbor, OH. Interment will follow in Salem Township Union Cemetery. Those wishing to give a memorial donation in Bob's name are asked to consider the Jack Baumgartner Scholarship Fund; Hospice of Northwest Ohio or First Tee of Great Lakes.
