Richard G. Bassett, 82, of Oak Harbor, died Tuesday morning at Riverview Healthcare Campus in Oak Harbor. Dick was born in Oak Harbor to Mary and Nahmy Bassett. At the age of four, Dick began working in the family grocery business. He joined the Navy at the age of 17 and served aboard the USS Marblehead in the Pacific theater. He returned home to run the grocery store with his mother, Mary and his brother, Abe. It was there he met his future wife, Dorothy, whom he married on August 6, 1950. Together, they raised three children. Dick was heavily involved in his community, serving on Oak Harbor's Board of Public Affairs and Village Council, as well as being an active member and past commander of the John A. Fader Post 114, and a member of VFW Post 8732 and the Oak Harbor Rotary Club. Dick was a major force in the lives of all of his family members, encouraging them in their interests, attending important events with them, and giving them the benefit of his experience to make them more successful. Dick retired in 1987, often working forty instead of eighty hour weeks at the grocery store. He also found time to enjoy golf, Ohio State football, traveling with Dorothy, his grandchildren, and many friends. Surviving are his wife, Dorothy (Dewey) Bassett; his son Mike (Debbi) Bassett, and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter, Jody and son, David. Visitation will be on Sunday, July 20 at Crosser Funeral Home in Oak Harbor from 2:00 until 9:00, with the family present from 2:00 until 4:00 and 6:00 until 9:00. services will be held on Monday, July 21 at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Oak Harbor at 11:00 A.M. Interment will follow in Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor. Memorial contributions may be made to the St. Boniface Renovation Fund, 215 Church Street, Oak Harbor, OH 43449 or to Stein Hospice, 1200 Sycamore Line, Sandusky, OH 44870.
