Richard A. Calland

January 27, 1930 — June 20, 2018

Richard Arthur Calland, Lt. Col. (ret) USAF.ANG 88, of Clyde and formerly of Port Clinton passed away peacefully June 20, 2018. He was born Jan. 27, 1930 in Bellefontaine, OH the son of Arthur N. and Leila (McKinley) Calland. He grew up on a farm on Calland Road near Urbana, Ohio. He joined the Army Air Corps after graduating from Concord High School, Urbana, Ohio in 1948. The Army Air Corps shortly became the United States Air Force. He served during the Korean War as a flight engineer on B-29s. During this time at Wheelus Air Force Base, Libya, he also was a scuba diver with the Italian Scuba Team. He went back to San Antonio, TX as an instructor in aircraft maintenance. During this time he met and married Doris Reif. He broke service for a couple years and worked in the Texas Oil Fields as a rowdy. He re-enlisted and was ordered to help open up Mountain Home, Idaho, AFB. Here he was with SAC and served on B-52s as a flight engineer. He stayed with SAC and studied at USC for aircraft accident investigation. Later on, he was ordered to Springfield, Ohio Air National Guard Base. Here he went from SSGT to 1st Lt. He served here with the 178th Fighter Group. Following his divorce from Doris, he met and married Mildred (Stanifer) West. Together they raised eight children. During this time he also made Captain and then Major. He spent time with NATO in Germany as an instructor for RAF in England and traveled around the world. He served during the Vietnam War, where he was part of a Logistics Group that advised the South Vietnamese and served in Saigon. As a Major he was the first Logistics Officer for the 200th RED HORSE Unit from Camp Perry, Ohio. He also served as interim Deputy Commander for the 200th RED HORSE. Retired from the PA. ANG as Chief of Aircraft Maintenance, Richard served close to 40 years in the USAF, 37 of them serving with the ANG, retiring as a Lt. Col. Richard was a member of Oliver Hazard Perry Masonic Lodge, Port Clinton, Ohio and the Port Clinton Order of Eastern Star, Past Patron of Icedore Chapter, Green Springs and Past Worshipful Master of the Lodge. He was also a member of the Fremont Post of The American Legion, Military Officers Association and the EAA. Preceded in death by his parents, brother-Kenneth McKinley Calland; sister-in-law, Marguerite Calland, and still born brother; wife: Doris (Reif), mother of his two children; second wife, Mildred (Stanifer) Calland and son: Arthur West II. Surviving are his wife: Janett S. Calland; children: Sarah E. (Charlie) Chapman of Warrensburg, MO, John A. Calland of Ft Worth, TX, Rhonda K. Driscoll of Claridge, PA, Cheryl A. Driscoll of London, OH, Robert C. (Staci) Driscoll of Greensburg, PA, Jeanne (Dennis) Behm of Dayton, OH, Roberta (David) Duval of Orlando, FL, Cindy Fillmore of Erie, MI, Linda (Rick) Richardson of Huron, OH, Michael West of London, OH; mother-in-law: N. Elizabeth Schubach of Grove City, OH; sister-in-law: Beverly (Leon) Barrick of Circleville, OH; sisters: Martha Hunt of London, OH, Donna May (Ernie) Lohnes of Urbana, OH; brother: Phillip (Nancy) Calland of Springfield, OH; grandchildren: Major, Jesse (Emily) Calland of Panama City, FL, Marci Calland of Benbrook, TX, Justine Harris of Seattle, WA, Mary Harris of Seattle, WA, Kiersten (Justin) Talley of Seattle, WA, Aron Harris of MO many great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held Monday, June 25, 2018 from 2:00 - 8:00 pm at Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1124 Fulton St. Port Clinton, Ohio with Masonic Lodge services at 7:00 pm. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Tuesday, June 26, 2018 at Firelands Presbyterian Church, 2626 E. Harbor Rd. Port Clinton, OH. Following the funeral there will be a luncheon at the church. Interment with military honors will be held 9:30am Wednesday, June 27, 2018 at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery, Rittman, Ohio.
