Rev. Harold C. Rust

Rev. Harold C. Rust, 87, of Lakeside, Ohio became as good as new on Wednesday, June 6, 2012 at Riverview Health Care Campus, Oak Harbor, OH. He was born April 17, 1925 in Hessville, OH the son of Carl and Cora (Hanley) Rust. He married Ann Heller on September 2, 1951 and she survives. Rev. Rust attended Solomon Lutheran School, Woodville, OH and graduated from Gibsonburg High School. He received his under-graduate degree from Capital University and his masters in Divinity from Trinity Lutheran Seminary. During his junior year of college at Capital he was honored by being chosen "Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges". As a college student he also participated in intramural sports, dramatics, student council, and was a member of Capital's Chapel Choir and Men's Glee Club. He was ordained as a Lutheran minister on June 18, 1950 at Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Hessville. He served at Trinity Lutheran Church, Bryan, OH, St. Luke Lutheran Church, Baltimore, MD, St Mark Lutheran Church, Elm Grove, WV, St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor. In 1979 he left Oak Harbor and started Concordia Lutheran Church, a mission church in Barefoot Bay, FL where he retired from parish ministry in 1995. From 1995 until 2005 he served as an interim minister in many churches in Florida and Ohio. In addition to parish responsibilities he has served on the Board of Directors of the Lutheran Student Foundation at West Virginia University, the Board of Directors of St. John Lutheran Home for the Aging in Mars, PA, as the first secretary of the National Stewardship Committee in Minneapolis, MN and for five years he directed six weekly television and radio programs for the Council of Churches in Whelling, WV. Three times he was honored by being selected as an official delegate to three national church conventions. He loved working with youth during his ministry. He enjoyed gardening and worked through Thrivent in disaster relief in Florida. Surviving are his wife: Ann; sons: Rev. Stephen (Joy) Rust of Burlington, NC, Rev. Dr. Theodore (Beverly) Rust of New Bern, NC, Andrew (Jill) Rust of Powell, OH; daughter: Elizabeth (Ray) Windisch of Marysville, OH; grandchildren: Dr. Jennifer Rust, John (Mivvi) Rust, Joel Rust, Hope Rust, Christian Rust, Daniel Rust, Andrew Rust, Matthew (Patricia) Rust, Hannah Rust, Corinne Windisch, Isaac Windisch; great-grandchildren: Laney Rust and Carly Rust; brother: Gerald "Jerry" (Norma) Rust of El Paso, TX. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers: Howard Rust, Richard Rust; sisters: Betty Hineline, Luella Swartz, Doris Flood. Memorial services will be conducted at 5:00 pm Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at St. John Ev. Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor, OH. Visitation will be held at the church on Tuesday from 4:00 until the time of the service. Burial will take place at a later date in Iowa.
