Merna M. Waits

Merna M. Waits, 89, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, and formerly of Knoxville, Iowa, died Tuesday at Riverview Healthcare Campus, Oak Harbor. She was born in Marion County, Iowa on November 25, 1918, the daughter of the late Thomas D. & Mable E. (Jackson) Briggs. Merna was a homemaker and an accomplished seamstress. She also enjoyed talking on her CB radio, using the handle, "Maxine". Merna had a very pleasant personality, and was known by many nicknames by her friends in Oak Harbor and at Riverview. On September 5, 1937, she married James "Foy" Waits, and he preceded her in death on July 1, 1987. Merna is survived by her daughter, Bette Whaley, Oak Harbor, Ohio; step-daughter, Lavina Youmans, DesMoines, Iowa; 5 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; 4 step great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great grandchildren. In addition to her husband and parents, Merna was preceded in death by sons-in-law, Jim Bryant and Art Whaley; and brothers, Raymond Briggs and Tommy Dean Briggs. Friends and family are invited to call after 1:00 P.M. Thursday at Crosser Funeral Home, Oak Harbor, where funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Thursday. Rev. Richard Bickelhaupt will officiate, and interment will be in Graceland Cemetery, Knoxville, Iowa.
