Melvin Z. Mccord

Melvin Zane McCord, Sr., 69, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, died Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Mercy St. Vincent Medical Center, Toledo, Ohio. He was born on December 12, 1943 in Morgantown, West Virginia, the youngest of 10 children of Ralph Wayne & Delcie Mae (Tennant) McCord. Mel and Wanda Peck met on September 30, 1962, and after a whirlwind romance of seven days, they were married on October 6, 1962. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary this last October with their children and families. Mel was a claims adjustor for State Auto from 1972 until his retirement in 2003. According to his friends at State Auto, he was almost immediately called back to help out with claims inspections and appraisals a few months after he retired. In his words, "When I left State Auto, I made an unofficial agreement to help out with claims inspections and appraisals if they needed someone in my area. I retired in April 2003 and by July, I was helping out with the Columbus hail storms. Since then, I have worked almost continuously for State Auto on catastrophes. Unfortunately, there have been enough catastrophes to have kept me busy ever since." Mel and his good friend, Jim Wilson, another State Auto claims retiree/associate, helped support our troops in various locations over Christmas time, by delivering gift packages including cookies, cakes, and other goodies. "We have appreciated Mel's extraordinary service to State Auto over the years," said Claim Manager Steve Pifer, "He was a dedicated Claims adjuster and friend to many her at State Auto. He will be greatly missed. Mel was a former member of the Oak Harbor Lions Club and was a charter member of Mid-County Emergency Medical Service, Oak Harbor. He was also co-owner of the former Ottawa Ambulance, Inc. of Oak Harbor and enjoyed golfing, fishing, and collecting antique cars. Mel is survived by his wife, Wanda; their children, Tammy & Mark Schimmel and their family, Scott, Amy, Cody and Katelyn Schimmel, Stacy, Jason, Nick, Brandon, and Drew Hainer, Tommy, Jill, Lane, and Ali Tack; Cheri and Jack Bartrom and their family, Jolee and Tommy, Jacob Zane, and Isaac Paul; Melvin Zane McCord, Jr. and his family Klehlyn, Kyler, Kelcie, and Melvin Zane, III; and Shawn & Heather McCord and their family, Zane and Delcie. Private committal services were held at the Oak Harbor Memorial Mausoleum at Salem Township Union Cemetery, with Rev. Raymond Ensman officiating.
