Mary Ellen Boon (née Buchhop), 93 of Indianapolis, IN, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at home surrounded by family. She was born May 27, 1931, in Napoleon, OH to the late Rudolph J. and Emma (Rohrs) Buchhop. She was a 1949 graduate of Wauseon High School. Mary attended the Toledo Hospital School of Nursing, where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in 1952 and became a Registered Nurse. Upon graduation, she moved to Port Clinton, OH, and began her professional career as a nurse at Magruder Memorial Hospital. It was soon afterwards that she met Edgar S. Boon of Oak Harbor, OH, and they married on October 19th, 1957. Mary and Ed raised two sons in Port Clinton and were active members of St. John Lutheran Church as well as many other civic organizations. Mary served as a Den Mother for the Cub Scouts; a member of the Junior Women’s club; served as co-chair for the Magruder hospital Charity Ball event; active member of the Port Clinton Yacht Club; and worked to organize the fund-raising activities for the Port Clinton High School Music Boosters. Mary loved to garden and enjoyed working outdoors to create beauty with plants and flowers. After their retirement, Mary and Ed spent winters in Fort Myers Beach, FL, where they made many new friends and enjoyed life on the beach. Mary and Ed moved from Port Clinton to Indianapolis in 2008 where they became active with the Holy Cross Lutheran Church. Survivors include her sons: Randall (Regina) Boon of Indianapolis and Brian (Joanne) Boon of South Lebanon, OH; grandchildren: Emma (Jack) Brink, Michael, Emily, Kate, Claire, and Max Boon; sister: Margaret Croninger; brother: John (Bonnie) Buchhop. Mary was preceded in death by her husband, Edgar, her parents and her sister Elaine. A Memorial Service will begin at 11:00am on Monday, September 16th at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 207 Adams St., Port Clinton, OH 43452, with the family to receive friends beginning at 10:00am until the time of Services at the Church. Burial will be immediately following at Salem Township Union Cemetery in Oak Harbor, OH. Those wishing to make Memorial contributions are asked to consider The American Cancer Society or Holy Cross Lutheran Church School in Lawrence, IN. Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Port Clinton is handling the arrangements.
