May 22, 1924 — December 9, 2016

Mary Elizabeth Heineman, 92, passed away peacefully on December 9, 2016 at the Kingston Residence of Sylvania. Born in Louisville, Kentucky, Mary moved to the Toledo area with her mother while still in grammar school. In high school, Mary worked summers at Put-in-Bay, Ohio. While there she met a teenaged Harry Heineman. Mary graduated from the former Libbey High School in 1942. She worked as a buyer at Lasalle & Koch Co. until leaving to raise a family. Years later, after having returned to Lasalles, a now successful businessman named Harry Heineman found her and they married in 1972. Mary then moved to Port Clinton, Ohio where she was involved in the family business, Heineman Beverage, a Miller Brewing distributorship, and Heineman Winery on South Bass Island. Eventually, Harry Heineman and his brother, Louis, split the company with Louis retaining the winery and Harry the beverage distributorship, which he subsequently sold in 2007 and retired. Mary and Harry enjoyed retirement splitting their time between Port Clinton and a home in Ft. Myers, Florida until Harry's death at age of 90 in 2011. Throughout her years in Port Clinton, Mary was active with her husband in his many memberships in the Knights of Columbus, Elks, Moose, Eagles and American Legion as well as a lifelong membership at Catawba Island Club. The causes of death were wear from a long life well lived and a desire to reunite with her husband, Harry, and her son Kraig Paneff. Mary was also predeceased by her beloved mother, Wilma DeVore, brother, William Alonzo Walker, sister Wilma Bugler and stepson Bernie Heineman. Left to cherish her memory are her children, Kirk Paneff, Mary Jo Paneff, Keith Paneff, Jill (Hutch) Strahm, grandson, Michael Paneff, great granddaughter, Maria Smedlund, sister, Margaret Gibson, brother-in-law, Louis Heineman, and sister-in-law, Justine Bianchi. After the Heineman Beverage distributorship was sold, Mary donated the building in which it was housed in honor of all her husband, Harry, had done for the Port Clinton community. Second St., Port Clinton, Ohio 43452 now houses the Portage Resale Center which sells gently used merchandise for the benefit of Ottawa County family charities.
