Mary Alice Teagarden, 87, of Genoa, Ohio, and formerly of Oak Harbor, Ohio, died Tuesday, September 18, 2012 at Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Toledo, Ohio. She was born in Fremont, Ohio on October 12, 1924, a daughter of Carl & Mary (Sullivan) Heid. A 1942 graduate of Fremont Ross High School, Mary Alice attended Notre Dame College in Cleveland, the University of Detroit, and the University of Toledo, where she received her degree in education. She was a mathematics teacher at Oak Harbor High School for 16 years. After retiring in 1973, Mary Alice was a substitute teacher for over 20 years for all Ottawa County schools. She was a member of St. Boniface Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, where she was active in the Altar & Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Oak Harbor Literary & Social Club and the Ottawa County Retired Teacher's Association. An avid reader, Mary Alice was a long time member of the Board of Trustees of the Oak Harbor Public Library. On June 26, 1948, Mary Alice married James L. Teagarden, and he preceded her in death on April 26, 1996. She is survived by her son, Terrance Teagarden, Toledo, Ohio; brothers, Robert (Sally) Heid, Fremont, James (Christina) Heid, Arizona; sister, Florence (John) Badger, Genoa, and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Rosemary & Jack Coleman, of Arizona. Also surviving are many nieces & nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and a brother, Phillip Heid. Friends may call after 9 A.M. Monday, September 24, 2012 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Oak Harbor, where a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 A.M. Monday. Rev. David L. Ritchie will be the celebrant, and interment will follow in Salem Township Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Oak Harbor Public Library or your local humane society.The family would like to express their sincere thanks to the staff at Genoa Retirement Village and Hospice of Northwest Ohio for all their kindness are care.
