Mary Alice Sutter, 91, of Sandusky, OH, and formerly of Oak Harbor, OH, died Wednesday morning at University Medical Center, Toledo, OH. She was born in Port Clinton, OH on December 8, 1915, the oldest child born to the late Ferdinand & Louise (Ries) Deppensmith. Mrs. Sutter graduated from the former Salem-Oak Harbor High School in 1933 as class Valedictorian. After graduation, she worked in the school office and at the Mulligan Electric Company as secretary and bookkeeper. On January 31, 1940, she married Godfrey Sutter, and she assisted her husband in managing The Wayside Tavern for 5 years and also the Sutter Insurance Agency and Real Estate Agency for a number of years. Mary Alice led an active life and was very committed to volunteer work. She was the secretary of the Oak Harbor High School Band & Orchestra Mother’s Club; accompanied the Glee Club for several years; was treasurer of the former Oak Harbor Mother’s Club; assisted in organizing Oak Harbor’s first kindergarten; worked in the R.C. Waters Elementary School library; was a Bloodmobile volunteer; was a 4-H, Brownie, and Cub Scout leader; was a poll worker on election day, and was accompanist for The Melody Makers Band. An active member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor, Mrs. Sutter was accompanist for St. John’s “Fabulous Kitchen Kuties”, was a member of the Miriam Circle, was a former secretary and treasurer of the W.E.L.C.A.; former treasurer of the Altar Guild, and was a Sunday School and Vacation Bible School teacher. Mrs. Sutter also accompanied Sunday services at Riverview Nursing Home, and loved bowling, playing the piano, gardening, knitting, and crocheting. Mrs. Sutter is survived by her husband, Godfrey “Fritz” Sutter; children, James (Deanna) Sutter, Diane (Joseph) Stacey, and William (Laura) Sutter; grandchildren, Alicia (Mark) Bernabie, Aaron () Sutter, Jonathan Sutter, Claire Sutter, Megan Stacey (Joel) Leight, and Sarah Stacey; great-grand ; brothers, Lloyd (Marian) Deppensmith, Roger (Arlene) Deppensmith; sisters, Dorothy Thurston, Carol Heschel, Marguerite Poorman. Also surviving are 3 step grandchildren, 3 step great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, Harvey Green, and her daughter, Janet Sutter Nedeau. The family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until the time of services at 3:00 P.M. Saturday at the Crosser Funeral Home, Oak Harbor. Vicar Joel Brown will officiate, and interment will be in Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
