Mark J. Segaard

On Thursday, October 5, Mark John Segaard, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away at age 79. Mark was born on January 30, 1944, to the late Stenson and Margaret (Covell) Segaard.

Mark was a 1962 graduate of Port Clinton High School. After graduation, Mark started a 42-year career working at US Gypsum. On April 15, 1963, Mark married Karen (Christiansen). Mark and Karen went on to have two sons: Mark Louis and Peter James. Mark was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, Port Clinton. In 2006, Mark retired from US Gypsum as electrical supervisor.

Mark enjoyed using his creative talents to forge metal. For 30 years, he was a member of Northwest Ohio Blacksmiths. Mark would frequently share/demonstrate this craft with others. He was passionate about family history/genealogy and spent countless hours researching relatives. Mark truly enjoyed nature. Often he could be found outside, walking the property around the shop and pond. Feeding the fish in the pond or the backyard birds was often a priority. He was a dedicated birdwatcher and grower of wildflowers. Mark found joy in sharing the wildflowers each summer. He was also a big fan of listening and playing Bluegrass music, which he shared with many family members and friends.

Mark was preceded in death by his parents; Stenson and Margaret (Covell) Segaard, and brothers: William and Robert Segaard. He is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Karen of Port Clinton; sons Mark (Sue) Segaard of Port Clinton and Peter (Dawn) Segaard of Oak Harbor, grandsons: Nathan, Logan, Owen, and Spencer; siblings: David Segaard of Port Clinton and Sue (Segaard) Rogers of Cincinnati; along with numerous nieces and nephews.

A memorial gathering with family and friends will take place on Monday, October 16, 2023, from 10 a.m. to noon at Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1124 Fulton St., Port Clinton, OH. A luncheon/reception will occur at Bay Township Hall, 4471 W. Fremont Rd., Port Clinton at 12:30 p.m. following the memorial gathering.
