DUE TO HAZARDOUS WEATHER CONDITIONS, MARILYN'S FUNERAL SERVICE WILL BE HELD AT 11:00 a.m. THURSDAY AT ST. JOHN'S UNITED CHURCH OF CHRIST, GENOA. Marilyn K. Deppen, 85, of Elmore, Ohio, died Saturday, March 8, 2014 at her home. She was born in Elmore on March 14, 1928, the daughter of Harry F. & Thelma E. (Burman) Redman. Marilyn was a 1946 graduate of the former Elmore High School, for which she wrote the Alma Mater. She was a 1950 graduate of Bowling Green State University, receiving her B.A. in Music Education. She subsequently received a B.A. in Elementary Education, and a Masters in Education also from B.G.S.U. On August 12, 1950, Marilyn married John E. Ingersoll, and he preceded her in death on March 9, 1973. She married Rev. Paul E. Deppen of Genoa on February 14, 1980, and he survives. Marilyn was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star, serving as Worthy Matron of the former Elmore Chapter #306, O.E.S. She was a Past Grand Organist for State of Ohio Grand Chapter, and was a current member of Perrysburg Chapter #446, O.E.S. She was also the Grand Aide to the Grand Deputy of District 1, International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. An active member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Genoa, where her husband was a long time Pastor, Marilyn served the church as an organist and enjoyed working on the children's programs. She began her teaching career as a music teacher, and then was an elementary school teacher. She taught at the former Weston-Tontogany Schools, Harris-Elmore Schools, and finally, Toth Elementary in the Perrysburg School System, where she was twice honored as teacher of the year. Marilyn was appointed to the Ohio Right to Read Commission by former State Superintendent of Education, Dr. Martin Essex, and served on that committee for five years. Marilyn loved lighthouses, and she and Paul traveled around the country in search of them. She enjoyed telling about the time she climbed to the top of the Marblehead Lighthouse while it was closed. Marilyn is survived by her husband of 34 years, Rev. Paul E. Deppen; daughters, Lynn Grear and Brenda (Paul) Roadarmel, both of Elmore, Dawn (Rev. Dr. James) Dumke, Perrysburg, Debbi (Tim) Harbal, Catawba Island, and Darla (Robert) VanHorn, Oak Harbor; grandchildren, Jennifer Sweetman, Christopher Grear, Amanda Downey, Kristen Calevro, Stephen Dumke, Rachelle Chaffee, Angela Powell, Rebekah, Rachel, & Glorietta Dumke, Jeffrey Harbal, Jodi Brunner, Kelly Simon, and Gregory VanHorn. She is also survived by 23 great-grandchildren. Marilyn was preceded in death by her parents, and her husband, John E. Ingersoll. Marilyn's family will receive friends from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at Crosser Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 19550 West State Route 51, where Order of the Eastern Star services will be held at 7:00 P.M. Tuesday. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, March 13, 2014 at St. John's United Church of Christ, 1213 Washington Street, Genoa, where friends may call after 10:00 A.M. Wednesday. Pastor Don J. Geismann and Pastor John W. Bock will officiate, and graveside services will be held at 1:00 P.M. Thursday at Evergreen Cemetery, St. Paris, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial contributions to the Organ Fund of St. John's United Church of Christ, Genoa; Harris-Elmore Fire & E.M.S., or to a charity of the donor's choice.
