Margaret “Peg” Nauts Belt Myers, 77 of Marblehead, died Sunday after a short illness following a fall. A native of Toledo, she was the daughter of Walter and Erma Riddlebaugh Nauts. She attended Whittier Elementary and DeVilbiss High School, as well a Bowling Green State University. Peg loved music, art, books and entertaining her family and friends. She spent her adult life dedicated to numerous types of community service, believing she had an obligation to use her talents, skills and energies in efforts to improve life for others. As a young wife and mother she was a member of Junior Matrons in San Carlos, CA. She was a past-president of the Tucker, GA Women’s Club and a member of the Garden Club in Carrabelle, Fla. She was a past-president of the Lakeside Literature Club, a member of the Lakeside Study Club, and the Lakeside Antiquarian Society. She was also a charter member of the Marblehead Lighthouse Historical Society, and an active friend of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, Marblehead. She was married almost 50 years to Leroy L. Belt, Jr. Following Leroy’s retirement from DuPont, the two spent more than ten years touring the United States in a motor home before finally settling in Marblehead, where Leroy had been born. They bought a home near the lake that was over 100 years old and christened it Go No Mo’. For several years before Leroy’s death the couple’s greatest joy lay in refurbishing the house and decorating it with his paintings. Peg eventually married an old family friend, Robert Myers of Marblehead and Carrabelle, Fla. Prior to Robert’s death two years ago, he and Peg shared a passion for preserving the Marblehead Lighthouse and developing the museum on that site. They divided their time each year between Florida and Marblehead, avoiding Ohio’s harsh winters. The couple also spent time working on projects through the Veterans of Foreign Wars in both communities. Peg developed a Veterans’ Day program in Carrabelle through which elementary school children were informed about the sacrifices made by American soldiers in WW I. She visited classrooms, read aloud In Flanders Field, gave each child a copy of the poem and a small American flag pin. In explaining the poem, she told children about the notable cemetery in Belgium where American Troops were buried so long ago, drawing parallels between that distant conflict and the sacrifices still being made by today’s American military personnel. Peg is survived by her sons Leroy III and David Belt, by four grandchildren, Eric, Stephen, Michael and Kristy Belt; by three great-grandchildren; her sisters Mary Ellen Leinaweaver and Jody (Geoffrey) Steuer; five nieces, two nephews and numerous cousins and friends. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Marblehead with the Rev. Warren Tropf officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Marblehead Lighthouse Society. The Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Peninsula Chapel, Lakeside-Marblehead, is serving the family.
