Lloyd P. Kirby, 88, of the Vineyard on Catawba Island passed away on Sunday, April 22, 2007 at Magruder Hospital. Paul was born on January 3, 1919 in Ocean City, NJ, the son of Rev. John B. and Virginia (Edwards) Kirby. On February 1, 1942 he married Jeanne R. Swartz and she survives. Paul graduated from Dickinson College in Carlisle, PA in June of 1940. His plans for a teaching career were derailed by World War II and he spent the next twelve years serving his country in the U. S. Army. Major Kirby headed the first WAC training program in Des Moines, Iowa before going overseas to China, Burma, and India, being a member of “Merrill’s Marauders”. Paul later worked for Playtex International in Dover, Delaware, Manati, Puerto Rico and New York City before returning to Puerto Rico as president of Friend-Smith Co. Inc. Paul retired in 1987 moving to Land O’Lakes, FL and later to Ohio. Paul is survived by his beloved wife of 65 years, Jeanne R. Kirby, and daughter and son-in-law, Paula and John Ladd of Put-in-Bay. He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Rev. John Kirby, Jr. and also his son William Bruce Kirby. A memorial services will be conducted at 11:00 am Thursday, April 26, 2007 at The Vineyard Community Center with Rev. Bruce Batchelor-Glader officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in Seaville, New Jersey. Memorial contributions may be made to Life Care Fund c/o The Vineyard on Catawba, Port Clinton, OH 43452.
