Leila Irene Tack

November 5, 1922 — July 6, 2024

Leila Irene (Hillman) Tack found eternal peace on July 6, 2024 after a life well-lived of 101 years. Her passing was at Riverview Health Care Campus, Oak Harbor.

Leila was born in a log cabin on Four-Mile House Road on November 5, 1922. She was the oldest of 3 children born to her parents Orlena (Miller) and Arnold Hillman including her brother Donald and sister Beverly. She was a 1940 graduate of Salem-Oak Harbor High School.

Leila married her beloved Harold Tack on November 13, 1941, at St. Paul’s Parsonage. They raised their children, Judy and Ron, while Harry worked for the Ottawa County Highway Garage and Leila busily worked at home, church and in the community. She was a member of St. Paul's United Church of Christ, Oak Harbor, and was very involved in every aspect of church life. She was a Sunday School nursery classroom teacher for many, many years where she guided the youngest at St. Paul’s through the first years of their church life. Leila was a member of the Abend Guild, helped with bereavement luncheons, prepared the bulletins and “Chimes” newsletter, counted the offering, assisted in the office, visited shut-ins until she herself was in her ‘90’s and took on a lifetime of tasks to serve The Lord and her church family. On June 24, 2020 she was named the Matriarch of St. Paul’s UCC.

Outside of her home, Leila was a poll worker for the Board of Elections and she worked for many years at WR Thomas, “The Five & Dime” Store. She always knew the current happenings in town and how everyone was connected. She will also be remembered for her gift of greeting cards mailed out to family and friends in celebration of birthdays, anniversaries, and other

milestones in their lives.

Through many holidays and celebrations, parties in the garage, visits and gatherings around the kitchen table, her family has many loving memories to take with them. The sounds of the scanner and WFRO on the kitchen radio could always be heard. She took great pride in having her family together, especially enjoying her cooking. She delighted (and was competitive) in a good card or board game with loved ones and took great pride in her flowerbeds.

Waiting to greet Leila in Heaven were her husband Harry, daughter and son-in-law Judith and Robert Silverwood, son Ronald Tack, Granddaughter Bobbi Biller, and Grandson Robert Silverwood, Jr. as well as her parents and brother, Don.

She is survived by by sister Beverly Foreman, Grandchildren David (Debi) Silverwood, Sherri (Brian) Winter, Ronald Silverwood, Angela (Timothy) Rahm, Tina (Michael) Anderson and Tonya (David Schwan) Tack, Grandson-in-Law Paul Biller, Daughter-in-Law Terry Whitlock- Karr, Great-Grandchildren Robert Silverwood, Sarah (Eric) Robinson, Alexander Silverwood,

Benjamin Winter, Andrew (Malinda) Winter, Elizabeth Biller, Hannah Biller, Olivia Rahm, William Rahm, Meredith Anderson, Evelyn Schwan and Great-Great Grandchildren Bryson Winter, Blake Kessler, Keegan Winter, Allison Winter and Katelynn Winter. “Aunt Sis” will also be very missed by many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Thank you to everyone who was blessed to be a part of Leila’s life throughout her 101 years and especially those who helped to care for her as the last of her days on earth closed in peace.

“’Tis grace has brought me safe thus far, and grace will lead me home.”
