Lary Faris

Lary Faris, of Lakeside, Ohio passed away on April 25, 2017 at Stein Hospice Care Center in Sandusky, Ohio. Born on February 23, 1933 , Lary grew up in northern Ohio spending elementary years in Fremont and later moving to Toledo. Summers were spent in Lakeside, Ohio. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School in Toledo in 1951. He played football, ran track, and was class president all while maintaining an A grade average. Columbia University offered him an academic scholarship which he accepted. At Columbia he earned dual degrees a Bachelor of Science in Engineering and a Bachelor of Arts and was a member of Sigma Chi. In 1955, he married his high school sweetheart, Marilyn (Van Dyne) Faris. Marilyn and Lary spent 61 wonderful years together. She was his love, his friend, his companion, and in later years his devoted caregiver. They raised three children and lived in Wyoming (Cincinnati), Ohio; Iowa City, Iowa; Sun City Center, Florida; and Lakeside, Ohio. In retirement, they travel the world together visiting Africa, Japan, Scotland, Europe, Central America, The Galapagos Islands, and most states in America. After graduation, he joined Proctor & Gamble. He worked at P&G for 33 years and led teams which innovated manufacturing processes and quality control. Later in his career, he became an expert in the emerging field of fostering creativity within organizations. His lifelong passion was playing Shuffleboard. He won 14 National Championships, more than any player before him. For 17 years, he wrote a column, "Shuffleboard Coach", concerning shuffleboard strategies and tactic which was published in over 20 newspapers. Lary is a member of The International Shuffleboard Hall of Fame, The United States Shuffleboard Hall of Fame, The Florida Shuffleboard Hall of Fame, and The Ohio Shuffleboard Hall of Fame. A third-generation fan of the Cincinnati Reds, he loved baseball. He coached his sons in little league and saw his Reds play in the 1970, 1972, 1975, 1976 and 1990 World Series. For many years after retirement, he had season tickets to spring training and provided family and friends with insightful and humorous scouting reports each spring. Anytime The Ohio State Marching Band played a concert near him, you could count on Lary to attend. He loved all types of music including classical, big band, Broadway Show tunes and jazz. Lary was a devoted father and grandfather. He attended games, plays, graduations and other events. In later years, Parkinson's disease robbed him of his ability to travel, but he kept track of the lives of each grandchild and loved to hear stories about how they were doing. Each summer, family and grandchildren visited Marlin and Lary at Lakeside. He encouraged his grandchildren to swim, fish, play shuffleboard, drive the golf cart, eat ice cream, have fun, and pursue their dreams. From the time he was 3 years old, Lary spent summers at Lakeside-Chautauqua on the shore of Lake Erie. He devoted considerable time and resources to giving back to this wonderful community which provides a unique environment devoted to family, religion, education, and recreation. He served on the Lakeside Association Board of Trustees for 16 years and served two terms as President of the Board. The impact of his guidance and leadership had a significant positive effect on the community which lasts to this day. H is survived by his wife Marilyn and their children and spouses: Jennifer (John) Bailer of Oxford, Ohio, Thomas (Mary Ruth) Faris of Madeira, Ohio, and Richard (Malene) Faris of Grandview Heights, Ohio. His surviving grandchildren are: Sara, Jacob, Christopher and Emily Bailer; Madeline and Sophia Faris; Robert and Jonathan Faris. He was preceded in death by his parents Leaman and Norma (Mitchell) Faris, his sister: Patricia (Faris) McWilliam, and his grandson Stuart Faris. Services will be held 11:00 am Tuesday, May 9, 2017 a Lakeside United Methodist Church. If desired, contributions in his name can be made to the Lakeside-Chautauqua Association, The Lakeside United Methodist Church or The Parkinson's Disease Foundation.
