Kelly Hymore, 81, of Port Clinton, Ohio died Wednesday, November 23, 2011 at Edgewood Manor Nursing Center, Port Clinton, Ohio, with his loving family by his side. He was born on September 22, 1930 in Williamson, West Virginia, the son of the late Mike and Lula (Dotson) Hymore. Kelly spent his younger years as a Golden Glove boxer in Toledo, Ohio at the police and fire gym. He had 15 professional featherweight bouts and approximately 20 amateur flyweight and bantamweight bouts. In March of 1948, Kelly entered the US Olympic tryouts held in Toledo for seven surrounding states and advanced to the semi finals before being defeated. He was a two time Toledo Golden Glove Champ. During his professional years, he was managed by the late Jimmy Murray out of New York and was a lifetime friend of the late Archie Moore, who is the light heavy weight all time leader in knock out victories. Kelly was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps, serving during the Korean War. He also boxed in the Marines. During his working career, he was a switchman at the B & O and C & O Railroads out of Walbridge and Toledo, Ohio until his retirement in the late 1970's. His hobbies included billiards, gardening, and dancing. Survivors include his daughters: Debbie (Dennis) Hymore-Tester, Sherry (Lonnie) Roach, Sandra Hymore-Blevins; sons: John Hymore, Kelly David Hymore; eleven grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; former wife: Jeanette (Gallos) Stambolis; brothers: Mike, Charles, Shawkey, and Khalid Hymore. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister: Anneca Dusseau and two brothers: Shakeep and Hassen Hymore. Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 27, 2011 at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton from 1-4pm, followed by a Memorial Service at 4pm with Pastor Jimmy Comstock officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Stein Hospice, Port Clinton Fire Department, or to the Alzheimer's Association.
