Kathryn Washio, 93, went to be with the Lord on May 28, 2013. She was born on June 15, 1919, in Lorain, Ohio and lived there almost her entire life. During her later years, she divided her time between the homes of her children in Florida and Ohio. Kathryn attended Lorain City Schools, including Lorain High School. On June 27, 1941, she and George Washio were married at St. Mary Church in Lorain. At the age of 70, she completed her high school education and proudly received her diploma on January 29, 1990. Kathryn was very active in St. Mary Church for over 70 years and was a member of the Band Guild, Altar-Rosary Society and choir. She was a Eucharistic minister, visited the sick and made Thanksgiving dinners for people in need. She coordinated numerous card parties, rummage sales and other fundraisers for St. Mary's. Her pie sales were especially popular. Kathryn loved watching golf on TV and was able to attend a golf tournament in Florida to watch her favorite golfer, Jack Nicklaus. She was a member of a pinochle club for over 50 years. During World War II, Kathryn served as a nurse's aide at St. Joseph Hospital. For many years, she worked at her sister's Jan-Terry Flower Shop and then at Off Broadway Flowers. She was a volunteer at the Palace Theatre. She was a Girl Scout leader, Cub Scout den mother, quilter, gardener, seamstress and needle worker. She loved to cook and was an excellent baker. She was an artist and painted many watercolors. She was also a storyteller and her grandchildren would listen for hours to the stories she made up about Tomahawk and Bill. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband George, parents Demytro and Rozalia Kozopas, sisters Mary Matchison, Anne Pasky and Sally Jenkins. Survivors include her two children, Kenneth Washio (Sally) of Bradenton, Florida, and Beverly Surovjak (Drew) of Port Clinton, Ohio; grandchildren Kristen, Drew, and Scott Surovjak, Kami Sayre (Ken), Lyndsey Morris (Matt) and Bradley Washio (Sara); eight great-grandchildren: Courtney, Colby, Chance and Carter Sayre; Sullivan, Cheney and Palin Morris; and Sofie Washio; sisters Rose Hencheck and Carol Delaney and many nieces and nephews. Visitation will be held on Saturday morning, June 1, at 10:00 at St. Mary Church, 309 Seventh St., Lorain, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 with Fr. Daniel Divis officiating. Burial will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Memorial donations may be given to St. Mary Church. Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Port Clinton, is handling arrangements for the family.
