June Claire Gahris

June C. Gahris, 83, of Lakeside-Marblehead, Ohio passed peacefully into the loving arms of God on Saturday, September 15, 2018 at Firelands Regional Medical Center in Sandusky, Ohio. She was born on May 3,1935 in Ocala, Florida, the daughter of Harmon L. Cole and Jessie (White) Cole. She married Thomas L. Gahris on June 10, 1957, and they remained life-long sweethearts and partners, modeling for almost 60 years what true love and devotion looks like. June graduated in 1953 from Weirsdale High School in Florida, and from Heidelberg College in Tiffin, Ohio in 1957. She was a dedicated second grade teacher for over 30 years, beginning her career in Danbury Schools with Tom in 1957, but spending the majority of her time at Portage Elementary School in Port Clinton. She was a gifted and innovative educator who believed firmly in the potential of each child and their ability to learn, support for the family and the importance of reading as a key to life success. Never content with average effort, June pushed herself and others to strive for excellence. She was caring, always highly prepared, and an exceptional mentor to students, their parents, and her colleagues. June was an ordained Elder in the Presbyterian Church and was a member of Firelands Presbyterian Church in Port Clinton, where she had served in the food pantry and delivered Meals on Wheels. She was deeply involved in evangelism work and taught Sunday School when she was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Sandusky. Her faith and commitment to God started very early in her life and remained a vital and essential part of who she was and how she lived. Believing firmly in Gods providence and power, June brought her faith boldly to her family, friendships, and her calling to teach. The impact of her commitment and willingness to allow God to work through her lives on in generations of children and those who loved her as wife, mother, sister, teacher, and friend. Cherishing her memory are her children Patti (Jon) Amy of Gahanna, OH; Doug (Connie) Gahris of Callahan FL, and Greg Gahris of St. Cloud FL, as well as three grandchildren; Sarah (David) Kruk, David Amy, and Kevin Gahris, and great-grandson Theodore Kruk. June is also survived by her loving sisters Harmonelle (Tommy, deceased) Perkins and Wanda (Buddy, deceased) Wheeler, and brother Frank (June) Cole. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Tom Gahris in 2017, and her parents. Calling hours will be Saturday, September 22, 2018 from 9:30 a.m. until the funeral service at 11:00 a.m. at Firelands Presbyterian Church, 2626 E. Harbor Rd, Port Clinton, Ohio. Pastor Mark Cooper will officiate. A light lunch will be served at the church following the service. Burial will be held at Sackett Cemetery in Marblehead at 1:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Firelands Presbyterian Church - Mission Committee.
