Judge James E. Thierry, of Oak Harbor, Ohio, passed away Sunday, December 5, 2010 under hospice care. He was born October 23, 1922 to James A. and Pearl Thierry in Akron, Ohio. He graduated from Cuyahoga Falls High School in 1940 and served as a forward observer in the field artillery in the European Theater in World War II. He married Dorothy Hoover in 1947 and they shared their lives for 63 years. Their children are Carol Metral of Middleboro, Massachusetts, James R. Thierry of Grove City, Ohio, Michelle Suhrbier of Columbia, South Carolina, Suzanne Thierry of Chambersburg, Pennsylvania, and John E. Thierry of Columbus, Georgia, 5 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. He received a Bachelor of Science degree from Kent State University and Juris Doctor from the College of Law, The Ohio State University. He practiced law for 24 years and also served as Law Librarian, Legal Officer at E.A.D., and assistant prosecuting attorney. He was appointed Judge of Port Clinton Municipal Court in February 1973 and served in this position until 1979. In 1979, he was elected to and served as Judge of Ottawa County Common Pleas Court until his retirement in 1991. He then accepted assignments as a visiting judge until 1997. He was a member of the Ottawa County Bar Association, American Legion, and Saint Thomas Episcopal Church, Port Clinton. He was an outstanding wood carver and three of his works of art are in the Ottawa County Common Pleas Court Room. He also enjoyed writing and is a published author of humorous fiction. Private funeral services were held at Crosser Funeral Home, Oak Harbor. Interment was in Salem Township Union Cemetery. Donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
