Joseph Vincent Passabet, Jr., 90, of Port Clinton, Ohio died on Sunday, October 17, 2010 at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton. He was born on November 5, 1919 in Hawthorne, New York, the son of Joseph V. and Lucy (Frey) Passabet, Sr. At a very early age he became an avid New York Yankee fan. He loved playing baseball and excelled in high school. It drew the attention of the Yankee scouts and at age 17, he signed a Yankee contract. He entered and played baseball at Colgate University with a sports scholarship. He graduated in 1941 and played professionally at Amsterdam New York until December 7, 1941. He joined the Army and spent 4 years in the chemical warfare division, attached to the 8th and 9th U.S. Air Force. After returning, he played at Norfolk, Va./Piedmont League and Binghamton, New York. He married Mary Agnes Mahoney on September 13, 1947 and she preceded him in death on December 15, 1990. He then spent his entire working career with Uniroyal at Naugatuck, Connecticut; Woonsocket, Rhode Island; Passaic, New Jersey and finally factory manager at the former Uniroyal Belt Plant in Port Clinton. Survivors include his children: Patricia (Henry) Petcavage, Riverside, Rhode Island; Joseph Vincent (Kimberly) Passabet III, Port Clinton, OH; Robert James Passabet, Sandusky, OH; Debra Sue Passabet, Sandusky, OH; Quentin Dennis Passabet, Port Clinton, OH; grandchildren: Michael, Nicholas, Kelly Anne, and Christopher; brothers: George (Rosemary) Passabet, Naugatuck, Connecticut; and James Passabet, Pleasantville, New York. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; grandson: Henry; and sister-in-law: Jean Passabet. Visitation will be held on Wednesday, October 20, 2010 from 2-4 and 6-8 pm at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton. On Thursday, October 21, 2010, prayers will begin at 9:30 am at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 am at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison Street, Port Clinton with Reverend John C. Missler, officiating. Burial will follow in Catawba Island Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. The family wishes to extend their appreciation to Dr. Stranathan, Dr. Que and the nursing staff at Magruder Hospital for all their help and care given to Joe.
