Joseph L. Von Der Weis

Joseph L. Von Der Weis, 89, of Port Clinton, OH passed away Saturday, January 29, 2022 at Stein Hospice Care Center, Sandusky, OH. He was born August 11, 1932 in Bellevue, OH the son of Carl and Juanita (Baker) Von Der Weis. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving during the Korean War. He was previously a history professor at The Ohio State University and taught school in Berlin Germany and Guidance Counselor at Port Clinton City Schools. He started working for Cedar Point as a Bell Hop at the Hotel Breakers and eventually ran the hotel. He retired from Cedar Point in 2000 as the Vice-President of Accommodations and served on the Board of Directors of Cedar Fair. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton. Surviving are his sister: Betty M. (George) Atkinson of Port Clinton; nephew: Richard V. (Katherine) Atkinson-Miller of Newark; great-nephews: Michael Joseph Miller of Belleville, MI, Tony Lee Miller of Newark, OH; great-nieces: Tonya Lynn Miller of Newark, Shawna Marie (Ron) Lovell of Newark; eight great-great nieces and nephews; four great-great-great nieces and nephews; close friends: Donald Groff II of Port Clinton, Betty Kaye of Port Clinton, Karla von Verna of Scottsdale, AZ and Georgia Smith of Port Clinton; several cousins and his beloved cat: Bootsy. He was preceded in death by his parents and nephew: Joseph M. Atkinson-Miller. Funeral services will be conducted 1:00 pm Saturday, April 23, 2022 at Neidecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 1124 Fulton St. Port Clinton, OH where visitation will be held Saturday from 12:00 – 1:00 pm.
