Joseph J. Malfara, 83, of Marblehead, died Wednesday August 11, 2010 at his residence. He was born October 29, 1926 in San Nicola Italy, the son of Vito and Isabella (Marchese) Malfara. Joe graduated from Lakeside High School and was president of the class of 1947. He was retired from the US Postal service, serving as Officer in Charge in various places such as Fremont and was the Postmaster in Oak Harbor at his retirement. He was the charter president of the APW in Ottawa County. He was a veteran of WWII serving in the US Navy and was the youngest seaman aboard the USS Yorktown. He was a member of the American Legion and VFW Post 7572, both of Marblehead. Joe was a former councilman for the Village of Marblehead, served as the Marshall for over 25 years and was elected to two terms as Mayor of Marblehead, in addition to being a former member of the central committee of the Ottawa County Democratic Party. Joe was an active member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, serving as a CCD instructor, on the Pastoral council and the Fr. Schafer Endowment Fund Board. He was the first Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus chapter 12224 of Marblehead. Joe was a member and manager of the Marblehead Merchants baseball team and coached little league baseball. His passions in life were baseball and cooking pasta for everybody he loved. One June 17, 1950, Joe married Dorothy J. (Thomas) and she survives, along with his daughters Elizabeth (Mark) Roth of Salem, NH and Victoria Pendleton of Port Clinton; sons David (Deborah), Sr. of Greensburg, PA, Robert (Lora) of Norwalk and Christopher (Donna) of Catawba Island; grandchildren Ann, Jennifer, Alexis, David, Jr., Dominic, Adam, Jessica, Nichole, Andrea, Joseph and Anthony; Five great grandchildren and a sister Rose (John) Zura of Marblehead. His parents and a brother Dominic preceded Joe in death. Friends may call from 3-5 and 7-9 pm Friday at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Peninsula Chapel, 7755 East Harbor Road, Marblehead and from 9:30 am Saturday until the Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30 at St Joseph Catholic Church, 822 Barclay Street, Marblehead. The Rev. Raymond Ensman will officiate. Burial will follow in St Joseph Cemetery with military honors conducted by VFW Post 7572.
