Joseph J. Cander

Joseph J. Cander, 83, of Sandusky, OH and formerly of Cleveland, OH, died Thursday, October 5, 2006 at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky. He was born June 3, 1913 in Cleveland, a son of the late Thomas and Catherine (Lotlonowski) Kendzierski. He married Alice Pepa-Capko on Feb. 7, 1947 and she survives. Mr. Cander worked for Graphite Bronze Co. which later became Gould Co. in Cleveland, retiring in 1975. From 1925 – 1930 he played Class A baseball for the sand lot league, being selected to the league All Star Team. From 1930 – 1933 he played class A Baseball for the Pony League team of the Cleveland Indians. During this time he traveled and played baseball in various states. He met many Baseball Greats including Babe Ruth, Lou Gerig and Joe DeMaggio. From 1933 – 1943 he played softball for the Graphite Bronze League. He was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in World War II. He was a member of Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church. Surviving is his wife, Alice and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by seven brothers and one sister. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 A.M. Tuesday, October 10, 2006 at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marblehead with the Rev. James Brown officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00-8:00 P.M. Monday at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Peninsula Chapel, Lakeside-Marblehead, OH. Evening prayer services will be held Monday evening at 7:30 P.M. at the funeral home. Additional visitation will be held Tuesday at the church from 9:30 until the time of the Mass. Interment will be in Riverview Cemetery, Port Clinton, OH. Memorial contributions may be made to the Ohio Veteran’s Home or Marblehead Fire Department.
