Jonathan Lee Brown, 89, died peacefully at his home in Elmore, OH on June 8, 2022. Jonathan was born December 24, 1932 in Toledo, OH during the Great Depression to the late Rev. Edwin and Ruth (Rosenburg) Brown. An industrious young man, during his teen years he worked as a librarian and hauled ice. He received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from the University of Toledo. He served in the United States Army and was stationed in Kenai, Alaska, where he translated intercepted Russian messages during the Cold War. He taught science and math in the Toledo Public Schools for 20 years and later worked as a machinist at CalVan Tools in Fremont. He was a member of Bethel Church and Portage Holiness Camp. Survivors include his wife of 67 years Betty (Shaffer) of Elmore, OH; children: James (Cheryl) Brown of Brockway, PA, David (Phyllis) Brown of Huntsville, AL, John Eric (Donna) Brown of Reynoldsburg, OH, and Roberta (Philip) Powell of Winston Salem, NC; grandchildren: Charity & Michael Ponce, Benjamin Brown, Joshua (Sarah) Brown, Timothy (Deidre) Brown, Christina (Luke) Vogan, Michelle (Damion) Haley, Jordan (Ellen) Brown, Oliver (Alisha) Brown, Isabella (David) Mattingly, Nicholas Brown, Jennifer Brown, Victor Pearl, and Skylar Brown; great- grandchildren: Noah, Samuel, Abigail, & Chloe Ponce; Lydia, Joanna, and Micah Brown; Regan & Everett Brown; Evie, Anna, & Malachi Vogan; Thomas, Caroline & Emily Brown; Jayden, Sophia & Lillian Brown; Haley Fuller; and Gabriel Jeremiah Mattingly. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Edwin Brown, sister Marilyn Grogg, granddaughter Kayla Brown, and great- granddaughter Naomi Brown. A Memorial Service will begin at 2pm on Sunday, June 12, 2022 at Bethel Church, 2920 S. State Route 590, Elmore, OH with Pastor Tim Sherman officiating. A light luncheon will follow at the Church.
