John Yonkof

John Yonkof, 85, of Marblehead, died Sunday, September 17, 2006 at Stein Hospice, Sandusky, OH. He was born February 18, 1921 in Fairpoint, OH the son of the late Adam and Anna (Sparenga) Yonkof. He married LaVerne Kamenik, and she preceded him in death in 1999. Mr. Yonkof retired from the United States Postal Service in 1984 after twenty years. Prior to that he was a master builder from 1948 – 1964. He served in the United States Coast Guard from 1942 – 1946 serving during World War II. He was active in the Danbury Senior Center; National Association of retired Federal Employees; Catholic Was Veterans Post 1905, Sandusky, OH; Senior Bowling League at Star Lanes and Cedar Point Lanes; American Legion Post 113, Port Clinton; St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marblehead, OH; he volunteered at the Ohio Veterans Home, Sandusky and he was a member of the Kingsway Dance Group. He was an avid antique car buff, loved bowling, dancing, fishing, boating, traveling, golfing and playing horse shoes. He was a very active volunteer in many local organizations. Surviving are his sons: John A. Yonkof of North Royalton, OH, Robert Yonkof of Garrettsville, OH Mark Yonkof of Garrettsville, OH; daughters: Bonnie (Yonkof) Fladung of Amherst, NH, Dianne (Yonkof) Toomey of Laconia, NH; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; brothers: Joseph Yonkof of Brunswick, OH, Adam Yonkof of South Amherst, OH, William Yonkof of North Ridgeville, OH. He was preceded in death by his wife of 51 years, LaVerne; brothers: Steve and Martin Yonkof both of North Ridgeville, OH. The family will receive friends on Thursday, September 21, 2006 from 6:00 – 8:00 pm at the Peninsula Chapel of Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Lakeside—Marblehead, OH where prayer services will begin at 10:30 am Friday followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:00 am Friday at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Marblehead, OH celebrated by the Rev.
