John V. “Slim” Veverka, 82, of Marblehead, OH, died Friday, May 26, 2006 at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton. John was born August 21, 1923 in Marblehead, a son of Sam and Frances (Luska) Veverka. He was retired from the Norfolk and Southern Railroad, was a member of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, and the VFW Post 7572 of Marblehead. He was a combat veteran of WWII serving in the US Army in the European Theater. He was an avid civil war buff and well known for his knowledge of the prisoner of war camp site on Johnson’s Island. John is survived by his wife Marian J. (Cronenberger), whom he married on November 6, 1954; sons: John C. (Annette) Veverka, Martin Veverka and Russell Veverka all of Marblehead; daughters: Bonnie Avalos of Palm Springs, CA and Kathleen Veverka of Woodville; 6 grandchildren; 5 great grandchildren, and his brother, Joseph Veverka of Marblehead. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Betsy Veverka on October 1, 2004; a grandson in infancy; brothers Frank, Anthony, Michael and Thomas; sisters Anna Zura, Julia Zippay, Mary Koran, Rose Lickfelt, Elizabeth Guba and Agnes in infancy. Friends may call from 2-8 P.M. Tuesday, May 30 at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Peninsula Chapel, Lakeside-Marblehead, where the family will be present from 2-4 & 6-8 P.M.. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Father James Brown at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday, May 31, 2006 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Marblehead, where visitation will be from 9 am until the time of the Mass. Burial will be in St. Joseph’s Catholic Cemetery, with military graveside services conducted by the VFW Post 7572 of Marblehead. Memorial contributions may be made to a charity of the donor’s choice.
