John Carnes Huffer, 84, of Catawba Island and formerly of Toledo, died Wednesday, October 19, 2016 at Magruder Hospital, Port Clinton, OH. He was born Jan. 30, 1932 in Toledo, the son of Earl W. and Helen (Burnham) Huffer. He graduated from DeVilbiss High School in 1950, Miami University in 1954 and he received his Law Degree from the University of Toledo in 1957. He married Susan Cooper on June 16, 1962 and she survives. John was previously an assistant Law Director at The City of Toledo working with HUD and then went into private practice with the firm Millward & Huffer. He was a Law Professor for three years at Oklahoma City University and 22 years at San Fernando College of Law where he became Dean of the College of Law. Before retiring in 1999 he taught law at Yantai University, Yantai, China and he was a Fulbright Scholar in Kabul Afghanistan for two years. He was an accomplished man, admired by many. Surviving are his wife: Susan; children: Peter C. (Marjorie) Huffer of Reston, VA, Kristin C. (Gabe) Harris of Maplewood, NJ, Adam J. (Joanne) Carnes of Moorpark, CA, Jenny (Craig) Olson of Colorado Springs, CO; nine grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; brother: William (Brooke) Huffer of Boulder, CO; sister-in-law: Peggy Huffer of Ottawa Hills, OH; and best friend Bill Humphrey of Maumee, OH. He was preceded in death by his brothers: Albert Huffer and Nicholas Huffer. A Celebration of John's Life will be held at a later date.
