Joe Albert Williams passed away June 25, 2013 fourteen days short of his ninety-first birthday. Joe was born in Ridgeway, Ohio on July 9, 1922. Joe grew up on a farm just south of Willard, Ohio. He attended Willard High School where he met and courted his future wife, Betty, a marriage that lasted 67 years until she died in 2010. The marriage produced two children: James, and Penne. Joe, with the help of his father Albert Williams built a home in Shelby, Ohio where the family lived until the mid 1980's. In 1959 Joe built a cottage in Marblehead, Ohio which later became the family home for his retirement years. During the winter of 1958 Joe spent his evenings precutting eighty percent of material for the cottage. At that time precut homes were almost nonexistent. Joe spent his entire life working in the retail lumber business. He liked to say that he had only one job for his entire life which was the lumber business. He retired in 1982 from Wickes Lumber Company, where he was a manager of one of their most successful stores. Joe was very active in social and community activities. He was a past president of the Shelby Jaycees, a scout leader, member of the Chamber of Commerce, board member at his local Methodist church, a past president of the Shelby Country Club and past president of the West Harbor Shores Association. Professionally, he was past president of his area Retail Lumber Association. He belonged to the Rotary Club, Elks, Masons, American Legion, and Moose Lodge. His favorite hobbies were golf which he played into his 80's, boating, and carpentry. He is survived by his son, James A. Williams (wife Jan), daughter Penne Coughlin, and grandson Trevor Hodges two step-granddaughters Doris Malinowski, Pam Hayden (Casey Hayden), and two step great-granddaughters Riley and Reed Hayden. Preceded in death was his wife Betty Jane Williams. The memorial service will be held Saturday at 11 am at Neidecker-LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Peninsula Chapel, 7755 East Harbor Road, Lakeside-Marblehead.
