Joan Marie Benya, 63 of Marblehead, OH passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 26, 2021 at her home. She was born March 12, 1958 in Tiffin, OH the daughter of John and Janet (Boes) Steinmetz. Joan graduated from St. Francis High School in Tiffin in 1976 and Bowling Green State University with a Bachelor’s degree in Medical Technology in 1980. She married James Benya on September 28, 1985. Joan worked in all aspects of the lab at Magruder Hospital in Port Clinton OH and previously in the lab at Mercy St. Vincent Medial Center in Toledo. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton, OH. She was a member of the Big Sister Big Brother program and received the Big Sister of the Year award for North West Ohio for her efforts in being a great mentor and role model. Joan will be remembered for her humor. Her hobbies were crocheting and piano playing. In facing her many challenges, she always found the positive side of life. Joan loved spending time with her nieces and nephews: Suzie McElheny, Cathy and Jenny Steinmetz, Renee and Jeanette Hagerty, Michael and Stephanie Gase, Andy Murnieks, Preston, Cameron and Madeline Clouse; Great Niece and Nephews: Alban, Juliet, and Jack Stevenson and Harrison Clouse and encouraging them to be their best. Joan loved being a caretaker of her loyal German Shephard’s. Surviving are her husband: James; mother: Janet Steinmetz of Marblehead; siblings: Jeff (Dianne) Steinmetz of Marblehead, Judy (Alec) Hagerty of Elyria, Jan (Tim) Gase of Marblehead, June Murnieks of Marblehead, Jill (Phil) Clouse of Medina and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father: John Steinmetz Visitation will be held from 2:00 – 4:00 and 6:00 – 8:00 pm on Friday, May 28, 2021 at Neidecker Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home & Cremation Service, Peninsula Chapel, 7755 E harbor Rd. Lakeside-Marblehead, OH. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated by Father John Missler at 10:00 am Saturday, May 29, 2021 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, 414 Madison St. Port Clinton, OH followed by a luncheon at the Immaculate Conception School Cafeteria. The Funeral Mass will be live streamed on the church's website: www.immaculateconceptionpc.com . Interment will be 10:00 am Tuesday, June 1, 2021 at Sackett Cemetery, Danbury Township.
