Obituary of Joan Bowen Loeffler (1931-2018). Joan Bowen Loeffler, 87, of Catawba Island, Ohio, died peacefully surrounded by her family, early Thursday morning, November 8, 2018. She was born in Kankakee, Illinois on March 27, 1931. Raised until her early teens in Chicago, Illinois, her family moved to Stony Ridge, Ohio where she graduated valedictorian of her class at North Troy High School (Lemoyne, Ohio). She was awarded a full ride scholarship to Flora Stone Mather College nka Case Western Reserve University and graduated with a bachelors degree in elementary education. Joan later pursued post graduate work at both George Washington University and Bowling Green State University. While at Case Western Reserve University, she met the love of her life and future husband Donald F. Loeffler. They married shortly after she graduated from college on August 16, 1952 and eventually settled in Port Clinton, Ohio where Joan raised their family and where she became involved in many local community organizations. Joan was particularly proud of serving on the board of Ida Rupp Public Library eventually becoming its President. During her tenure, Ida Rupp expanded to its current location and increased its circulation and program services. She also served on the inaugural advisory board of Bowling Green State University-Firelands College and was an active member of Literary and Social Club, Playmakers, the Port Clinton Yacht Club, the Catawba Island Club and the Nomads Travel Club. Joan was a voracious reader, loved to travel and loved to entertain. In particular, friends, family and neighbors enjoyed Joans annual "Memorial Day First Shot Party" where the firing of a pre revolutionary war cannon welcomed in the summer season. Joan was married to her husband Donald F. Loeffler, M.D. for 58 years. He preceded her in death. She is survived by her three children, D. Bowen (Julie) Loeffler of Huron, Ohio, Susan (Fritz) Hany of Oak Harbor, Ohio and Mary "Molly" (Robert) Mack of Perrysburg, Ohio; seven grandchildren, Joan Hany, Elizabeth Hany, Robert Austin Mack, Perry Bowen Mack, Mary Shannon Mack, Julia Bowen Loeffler and Isabella Loeffler; sister, Margaret (John) Bodie, Port Clinton, Ohio, sister-in-law Norma J. Christen, Bowling Green, Ohio and numerous beloved nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, John H. Bowen and Gladys B. (Owen) Bowen and her brother Lt. John H. Bowen, Jr. A celebration of life will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 214 E. Second Street, Port Clinton, Ohio, on Saturday, November, 17, 2018.
