James A. Whitacre, 79, of Catawba Island and Beverly Hills, Florida, died June 15, 2009 at his residence in Florida. He was born August 16, 1929 in Buffalo, NY, the son of the late Paul and Florence (Dewalt) Whitacre. A graduate of General Motors Institute and Massachusetts Institute of Technology, James was an executive at General Motors and retired in 1987 after 40 plus years of service. He served in the US Army from 1953-55, stationed in Germany. He was a member of the NRA, the American Legion, the Catawba Island Club and the Immaculate Conception Church. James was an avid hunter and fisherman, having gone fishing in the Arctic for 51 consecutive years. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Carol (Nowak) whom he married on May 30, 1959; son Tom (Lisa) Whitacre of Los Alamos, NM; daughters Maryellen Whitacre of Tampa, Fl, Amy Whitacre of Cleveland and Elizabeth (Michael) Meisler of Marblehead; grandchildren Madeline and Jack Whitacre of Los Alamos, NM; brother David Whitacre of Dunnellon, Fl; sisters Alice Smith of Clarence Center, NY and Mary Lou Roberts of Akron, NY. He was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Paula Drachenberg and a brother Eugene Whitacre. Friends may call from 4-8 pm Tuesday July 14 at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton Street, Port Clinton. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. Fr. John C. Missler at 10 am Wednesday July 15 at the Immaculate Conception Church, 414 Madison Street, Port Clinton. Burial will follow in Catawba Island Cemetery.
