Gordon Harry Witty, 81 of Elmore died Thursday, January 10, 2008 at St. Charles Mercy Hospital, Oregon, OH. He was born August 22, 1926 in Elmore to the late Harry C. and Clara (Flick) Witty. He was a 1944 graduate of Harris- Elmore High School. On November 4, 1944 he married the former Patsy J. Marshall who preceded him in death on December 18, 2004. He was a Veteran of the United States Air Force. Gordon was well known as the Cemetery Sexton for Harris Twp. Cemetery for about 15 years retiring in 1990. He was a member of St. Paul Trinity United Methodist Church, an American Legion Post 279 both of Elmore. He also had memberships in the United States Trotting Association, was a Charter Member, Past President, and Director of Harness Racing for the Ottawa County Fair, member of the Ohio Harness Horse Association, Past Director and President of Northwestern Ohio Harness Racing Association. Gordon drove harness horses for 50 years all over the area and was honored in 2004 by the United States Trotting Association and Ohio Harness Horsemen for his many years of support and dedication as an owner, breeder, driver, trainer and shoed his own horses. Survivors include his son Michael J. (Judy) Witty of Elmore, daughter Catherine A. Smith of Genoa, granddaughter Kelly Knitz, and great- grandchildren Samuel and Jacob. He was preceded in death by his wife, infant son Matthew, brother Beryl Witty and sister Evelyn Schwartz. Visitation will be Sunday from 11am to 8pm at the Crosser Funeral Home, Elmore Chapel. Funeral Services will begin at 1pm Monday, January 14, 2008 at the Funeral Home with Pastor Rick Stuhmer officiating. Burial will be in Harris- Elmore Union Cemetery, Elmore.
