Godfrey "Fritz" Sutter, 98, of Sandusky, Ohio, and formerly of Oak Harbor, Ohio, died Friday, May 2, 2008 at Admiral's Pointe Nursing and Rehabilitation, Huron, Ohio. He was born in Oak Harbor on June 16, 1909, a son of John A. "Henry" and Ella (Sonnichsen) Sutter. Fritz was a 1927 graduate of Salem-Oak Harbor High School. A life-long member of St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, he was a former church council member, treasurer and financial secretary, and also sang in the Senior Choir for many years. He was a partner in the former Sutter & Son contracting business, and assisted his wife in managing the former Wayside Tavern for several years. Fritz also worked in the inspection department of the former Erie Army Depot for 23 years, retiring in 1965. After his retirement, he sold janitorial supplies for the Kellermeyer Company. He also was an insurance agent for State Mutual Life Insurance Company, working out of his home along with his wife, doing business as The Sutter Insurance Agency. Fritz was an avid bowler and fisherman, and was a past president of the Oak Harbor Conservation Club. He also played the trumpet in the Genoa Legion Band for a number of years. On January 31, 1940, he married the former Mary Alice Deppensmith, and she preceded him in death on April 25, 2007. He is survived by his children, James (Deanna) Sutter, Diane (Joseph) Stacey, and William (Laura) Sutter; sisters, Esther Bell, Henriella Meinke, and Valena Zimmerman; 9 grandchildren, and 6 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife; daughter, Janet Nedeau; brothers, Arthur, Paul, Martin, William, and Peter Sutter; and sisters Marie Taylor, Josephine Miller, and Clara Shafer. The family will receive friends from 6-8 P.M. Tuesday at the Crosser Funeral Home, Oak Harbor. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Wednesday at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, Oak Harbor, with Pastor David J. Tinker officiating. Interment will be in Union Cemetery, Oak Harbor.
