Gilberto "Gilbert" Garza Mares

Gilberto “Gilbert” Garza Mares, 85, of Port Clinton, passed away on January 19, 2021 at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital, Toledo, OH. Gilberto was born on January 4, 1936 in Santa Rosa, TX the son of Ezequiel and Francisca (Garza) Mares. He married Olga Alba. He worked as a vineyard tender for Meier’s Wine Cellars on North Bass Island, Ohio for over 30 years. He was a good, hard working and gentle man who devoted his entire life to his family. He enjoyed retirement, loved being outdoors, gardening and enjoyed providing for those in need. Gilbert is preceded in death by his wife Olga in 2016; his parents: Ezequiel and Francisca; sisters: Virginia Espinosa and Maria Silva both of Harlingen, TX, Ernestina Ovalle of Lyford, TX; brothers: Paublo Mares of Gary, IN and Manuel Mares of Mercedes, TX. He is survived by a brother: Juan Mares; sisters: Ramona Forey, Paula Davila and Donica Rivera; daughters: Mary Mares of California, Sonia Mares of Texas, Juanita “Jane” (Patrick) Wahlers of Port Clinton, son: Gilberto Marez, Jr or Port Clinton; grandchildren: Isaac, Jessica, Olivia, Enedelia, Amanda, Christina, Cindy, Kristen, Samantha, Gilberto III, Olga and many grand-nieces and nephews. Per Gilbert’s wishes, cremation will occur and there will be no visitation. The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to the staff at Mercy St. Vincent Hospital, The Ottawa County Office of Ageing, The Ohioans Nursing Staff and all medical providers that helped make his final years in the greatest comfort.
