Gene Volly Anderson (July 23, 1939 - October 31, 2021 ) Gene Anderson, 82, of Port Clinton passed away in his sleep on October 31, 2021. He was born in Lansing, Michigan on July 23, 1939 and graduated from Everett High School in Lansing. Gene enlisted in the United States Army and served as a military policeman at the border of North and South Korea. Gene rose to the rank of Sergeant and his service was decorated and resulted in many commendations. After his military service, Gene began work for Toledo Edison (later First Energy), as a lineman and later as an electrical and emergency notification technician, retiring after 28 years of service with the last half heading the unit at Davis-Besse Power Station. After retiring he worked for twenty years as an electrical technician at Futronics in Fremont. Gene also served two (2) years as a caretaker at Point Iroquois Lighthouse in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. Gene was a highly involved community volunteer as a charter member and past president of the Ottawa County Amateur Radio Club. He also served as a Reserve Deputy of the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office and twenty years volunteering at the Back to the Wild Animal Refuge in Castalia and additionally as a volunteer at Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge and Magee Marsh Wildlife Area in Oak Harbor. He was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Oak Harbor. His hobbies were building and repairing radios and other electronics, birding, and travel. Having never met a stranger, Gene will be remembered for a kind heart, quick wit, toothy grin, and unforgettable laugh. Gene is survived by his companion of 33 years, Martha Dykes; Sister, Nancy Logan of Lansing, MI; sons, Brad of Oak Harbor, OH and Bart of Cleveland. He was preceded in death by his father, Asa, and mother, Sophia (Kuchinski). A visitation will be held on Saturday, November 6 at 10:00 AM at Niedecker, Crosser & Priesman Funeral Home, 1124 Fulton St. Port Clinton. A memorial service will follow visitation and begin at 11:00 AM at the funeral home with Rev. Warren Brown officiating. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations to Back to the Wild Animal Refuge, P. O. Box 423, Castalia, OH 44824.
