Gail F. (Herbert) Pickut, 54, of Oak Harbor, OH, died Sunday evening at Riverview Cottage Cove, Oak Harbor. She was born on October 17, 1952, the daughter of Clifford & Elva (Klug) Herbert. A 1971 graduate of Oak Harbor High School, Gail received her Bachelor Degree from the University of Akron, and her Master’s Degree from Bowling Green State University. She also studied at the University of Wisconsin, and in London, England. In July of 1975, Gail married Harold B. “Woody” Pickut, and he preceded her in death on October 9, 1982. Gail and Woody worked for two summers as Rangers at the Wind Cave National Park in South Dakota. She took pride in the fact that she hiked to the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and back out again. Gail enjoyed traveling and visited England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, and many U.S. cities and National Parks. Despite having been diagnosed with MS over 30 years ago, she led an active and productive life. Gail was a chemistry teacher for over 30 years, first at Elmwood Schools in Wood County, and then at Oak Harbor High School. She appreciated comments from her former students that they found college freshman chemistry understandable because of their background in her high school class. Gail had been regularly chosen as an “Honored Educator” by a graduating senior for the Top Ten Banquet, and was awarded the Joanne Hablitzel Teacher Award. She was also one of 17 profiled in an American Chemical Society publication “Working Chemists with Disabilities”. Gail was a member of the National Education Association, the Ohio Education Association, and the Oak Harbor Education Association. A member of St. Paul United Church of Christ, Oak Harbor, she was a member of the first Hand Bell Choir. Gail is survived by her mother, Elva Herbert, Oak Harbor; son, Ryan A. Pickut, Toledo, OH; brothers, Keith (Jan) Herbert, EauClaire, WI, Alan (Karen) Herbert, Uniontown, OH, Mark (Pam) Herbert, Brunswick, OH, and Kevin (Debbie) Herbert, Hinckley, OH. She was preceded in death by her father, Clifford Herbert, and her husband, Woody Pickut. Friends may call from 2-8 P.M.
