Frederick W. Wilhelm, 85, of Port Clinton, Ohio, died Saturday, December 30, 2006 at his residence. He was born on July 18, 1921 in North Monroeville, Ohio, the oldest son of Fred A. and Rose (Fitz) Wilhelm. Fred and his family moved to Put-in-Bay, OH in 1923 and lived on the island until he and his wife, Eva moved to Port Clinton in 1997. Fred served in the U.S. Navy for four years during World War II. When he returned to the island after his service time was completed, Fred worked for Lay Brother Fisheries starting in 1946 as a boat operator. On October 12, 1946 he married his wife the former Eva Woischke at Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church at Put-in-Bay. Fred worked for Lay brothers until they closed their business on the island. Fred then went to work for his father-in-law, Kurt Woischke at Island Maintenance Construction. Fred and Eva purchased the company when Kurt retired. They also purchased the South Shore Cottages and operated them from 1963 until 1998. Fred was active in his community. He was a member of the Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department; a 62 year member and former commander of American Legion Post 542, Put-in-Bay. Fred was a member and officer of the Put-in-Bay Board of Education and was on the Council and a former member of Mother of Sorrows Catholic Church. He is a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Port Clinton. Fred is survived by his wife Eva; daughter, Janis (Curtis) Allard of Chesterfield, MI; sons, Walter (Debra) Wilhelm of Chesterfield, MI and Gary (Liz) Wilhelm of Marblehead, OH; Grandchildren, Wendy LaPointe, Rachel Malt, Laura Allard, Liesa Schultz, Christopher Jones; Great-Grandchildren, Madeline, Joseph, Shaun, Nathaniel, & William. He was preceded in death by his parents and only sibling, Harold Wilhelm. The family will receive friends from 2-8 P.M. Wednesday at the Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Port Clinton, where prayer services will begin at 10:30 A.M. on Thursday. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by the Rev. John C. Missler at 11:00 A.M. on Thursday, January 4, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Port Clinton. Interment will be in Mapleleaf Cemetery, Put-in-Bay. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Put-in-Bay Volunteer Fire Department, Immaculate Conception Church, or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
