Fred Boss, 72, of Elmore, peacefully passed away April 6, 2008 at St. Charles Mercy Hospital surrounded by his friends and family members. He was born to Martin and Myrtle (Fic) Boss of Elmore on June 8, 1935. He was a 1953 graduate of Harris-Elmore High School. He had been married to Shirley Fulweber and they had maintained a friendly relationship until his death. Fred was a life- long farmer in Ottawa County's Harris and Benton Townships having retired in 2005 due to failing health. Fred and his brother Ed farmed together for more than 40 years from the 1950's until the early 1990's and then Fred carried on until his retirement. Early on, the Boss Brothers strove for feed efficiency and grade quality in beef production and also had company production records for both sugar beets and tomatoes in Fremont. In later years, after the closing of the beet plant, he downsized to a row crop rotation. In the late 1970's, he began a relationship representing Harris Township on the Ottawa County Farm Bureau Board of Directors and continued this until his ill health in 2007. He served as Board President in the early 1980's and enjoyed representing Ottawa County Farm Bureau both in Columbus and Washington D.C. He also had an avid passion for the local auto racing. It started out at Fremont and Sandusky Speedway with the "super-modified's" in the late 1950's and then he liked the local paved tracks like Toledo, Flat Rock, and Lorain County with the "super- late" models from the 1960's on. After age 65, his interests really took off in auctions. He always had a dollar bid for anything just to explore what treasures might be lurking in the box. One of his regrets as his health failed was that he could not go to see the boys at the auctions around the Fremont Area. Fred was the proud father of Christine (Rick) Atwater of Oak Harbor, and Barry (Valerie) Boss of Clyde, OH, and special cousin John (Jackie) Boss. He enjoyed his grandchildren Corrine and Courtney Atwater, as well as his step grandchildren; Kevin, Emily, Elizabeth, and Erica Langenfelder. He was preceded in death by his older brother Edward (Phyllis) Boss, and sisters: Katherine (Raymond) Arndt and Bernice (Delmer) Oehmke. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-8pm at the Crosser Funeral Home, Oak Harbor. Funeral Services will begin at 11am Thursday, April 10, 2008 at the Funeral Home. Burial will be in Elliston Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions can be mad to either Harris-Elmore E.M.S. or the Palliative Care Unit at St. Charles Mercy Hospital.
