Frances E. Mattoon

June 27, 1917 — December 26, 2013

Frances Erna Mattoon passed away on December 26, 2013, at home at the age of 96. Frances was born on June 27, 1917, on a farm near Bryan, Ohio. She was the daughter of Erna Agnes (Donze) and Emerson Earl May. On June 6, 1946, Frances married Charles Leslie Mattoon in Bryan, Ohio; he preceded her in death on May 8, 1998. Frances was a 1935 graduate of Bryan High School, and earned a teaching certificate in 1937and a Bachelor's degree in Education in 1943 from Bowling Green State University. She began her career at Jerusalem school in Williams county, teaching seven grades in a one-room school from 1937-1939. From 1939-1943, she taught at Farmer school, from 1943-1945 at Hoffman school near Stryker, Ohio, and from 1945-1946 at Pioneer school. Following her marriage Frances taught second grade in Port Clinton for six years. After raising her daughters, she returned to Port Clinton schools as a substitute teacher and a classroom volunteer for many years. Frances was a Girl Scout volunteer for over 32 years, serving as a dedicated troop leader for many girls. She was also a volunteer for the adult literacy program. She was a long-time member of the Port Clinton Lions Club, a lifetime member of the Ottawa County Genealogical Society, and a member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees. Frances was an avid reader, and enjoyed her gardening, sewing, crocheting, traveling with her husband, and spending time with her family. Frances is survived by her daughters Mary (Mark) Kozlok of Port Clinton, Margaret Mattoon of Toledo, grandchildren Amanda (Delbert) Hatt and Stephen Kozlok, and great- granddaughters Lilly and Chloe Hatt, all of Port Clinton. The family thanks all the caregivers who enabled Frances to stay at home over the past few years. Special thanks to Twyla, Heather, Kami, Jami, Patty, Shawna, and Dawn. Thanks also to Stein Hospice for the care and support for Frances and family. Funeral services will be conducted 11:00 am Friday, January 3, 2014 at Neidecker, LeVeck & Crosser Funeral Home, Port Clinton, OH where visitation will be held Thursday from 2:00 4:00 and 6:00 8:00 pm. Interment services will be conducted 11:00 am Saturday, Jan. 4, 2014 at Shiffler Cemetery, Bryan, OH. Pastor Brenda Hurley-Shank will be officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to the Port Clinton Lions Club Sight Fund or to Stein Hospice.
